Advanced Learner's Program

Balance Both Your Passion and Academics

"Most children in school fail to develop more than a tiny part of the tremendous capacity for learning, understanding, and creating with which they were born and of which they made full use during the first two or three years of their lives...They fail because they are afraid, bored and confused."
-John Holt

"One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year...It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of education have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted by means of coercion and a sense of duty. To the contrary, I believe it would be possible to rob even a healthy beast of prey of its voraciousness, if it were possible, with the aid of a whip, to force the beast to devour continuously, even when not hungry."
-Albert Einstein

Anand was bored and confused. He had always been a very good student. His academic scores were well above average and he not unoften topped in his examinations. It had been fine like that. At least till his eighth grade. But somehow, after that he had began to lose motivation for his academics. Of course, he still managed to score high but that was more due to force of habit than by active choice. His teachers had noticed it often and at last conveyed it to his parents in one of the parent-teacher meetings. They advised them to seek a counselor's help as otherwise, Anand would in danger of losing not only his motivation but also his capabilities.

Anand himself could not understand what was happening. He could score by convincing himself that it was important to do so…but then…

And then one day his parents were really alarmed. Anand was alarmed no less. He had obtained average scores in more than three subjects. He felt he had lost his purpose. It was at this time that they were referred to CFRCE by one of Anand's seniors at school.

Anand and his parents came to CFRCE and were ushered into the office. They met and appraised one of the Directors of the situation.

"He has never been like this before," Anand's mother explained. "He has lost all motivation for his studies. Besides, he has stopped playing. He even discontinued his tennis and guitar classes. We are worried about him."

The Director grasped the situation immediately. It was something that happened year after year. The basic issues were quite common. Many a student before Anand had faced such a situation. And to many a student the Advanced Learner's Mentoring Program had been the solution. Still, the Director wanted to make sure whether Anand was ready for the program.

"Anand, I see that you are looking from time to time at that experiment on the table over there." He remerked.

"Oh, yes…I have seen it before."

"Have you?"

"Yes, it is a model of the atom isn't it? I think it is a model showing the electron spin precession."

"Yes, it is, you are absolutely right. How do you know about electron spin precession? Do you know what it really means?" Asked the Director, visibly surprised.

"It is called the Larmour precession. It happens when an atom is placed in an electromagnetic field…a magnetic field to be precise…" Anand said.

The conversation went on for a full fifteen minutes. Anand's parents looked on bewildered.

The Director then turned to them and said. "It is but natural that Anand is bored and is losing motivation. He is quite advanced, in fact much beyond his school level. And as the challenge is very low and his skills very high he is in the boredom zone. It is simply a case of lack of optimal experience or flow. There is essentially only one way out."

"Sir, what is that?"

"To rise the challenge to match his skills. To let him follow his passion and master topics appropriate to his intellectual maturity. You see, his mental age is far above the physical age the school is giving attention to. But there is a catch in letting him do that…"

"Sir, what is the catch? Why cannot he do that?"

"The catch is, if he follows his passion unguided, he is likely to get absorbed in higher level topics and lose track altogether of his school curriculum. Then, his grades would fall much below the present. But if he follows his passion in a guided manner, he could simultaneously fulfill both his intellectual hunger and his school requirements."

"I want to do that!" Anand spoke instantaneously.

"Yes, sir, is it possible to guide him to do that?" Anands mother asked.

"Certainly," the Director affirmed. "The CFRCE Advanced Learner's Program does exactly that."

"What is the CFRCE Advanced Learner's Mentoring Program?" Asked Anand's father. "We have heard of the Accelerated Learner's Program and the Academic Achiever's Program."

"Let me explain about the CFRCE Advanced Learner's Program," the Director said. "As you are aware, the CFRCE Accelerated Learner's Program is for students who want to go years and decades ahead of their school level. That assumes also that they are already quite fine in their academics. On the other hand, the Academic Achievers' Program is for students who have difficulties in their academics, who are performing poorly and often failing in their examinations. The Advanced Learner's Program is a balance between the two. It empowers the student to follow and master advanced level topics and at the same reach heights of academic excellence."

"That seems too good to be true!" Anand's father was surprised. "Is that really possible?"

"Yes, absolutely," the Director assured him. "Not only have students followed their passion and mastered topics beyond their school level, though not at the extraordinary level of the Accelerated Learner's, but also they have often become toppers in their Board and entrance Examinations. Many of them have obtained admission in Ivy League Universities with exceptional awards and scholarships. You can read about them in our Success Stories section on the CFRCE website."

Anand's parents soon took the decision to apply for the Advanced Learner's Program. Anand wrote a very strong Statement of Purpose and qualified for the Interview. After successfully going through it he was admitted to the Advanced Learner's Program. The rest is part of the CFRCE traiblazers history.
